Why does my vehicle turn over but not start?

Before starting any of the following steps, make sure the remote control On/Off unit is cleared (if so equipped) and the tether cord is connected. The tether kill switch is generally located at the rear of the ATV.

This troubleshooting guide is for a Gokart/ATV/Scooter that will not start even though the engine does turn over when the starter button is pressed.
Before using this guide, it is helpful to have reviewed the appropriate "Start-up" guides available in the Support section of our site.

Check For Spark:

  1. Apply brake and turn key to the “on” position.
  2. Remove the spark plug and ground the “hex” shoulder to a bare metal engine part. Be sure no gasoline is near this source of ignition.
  3. Crank the engine by pulling the rope or turning the key. You should see a blue spark jump across the plug gap. If you have a good hot spark, skip to the gas flow section.
  4. If the spark is yellow or weak, first try a new spark plug. (NGK CR7HS is the stock spark plug for most units.) Do not try to clean the old one.
  5. Set the new plug gap to the proper spec (usually 0.030") and check for spark again.  If no spark, please contact us for further assistance.

Check For Gas Flow:

  1. Remove fuel line from the carburetor, hold it over a container and check for gas flow.
  2. Flow should be the full stream of the line size. If fuel is flowing freely, then the trouble is in the carburetor.
  3. If there is little or no gas flow, remove the gas cap and see what happens. If gas flow increases you will need to drill a small hole (1/16") in the top of the gas cap for venting.
  4.  If there is no improvement when gas cap is removed, then the trouble could be in the fuel line shut off at the gas tank. Ensure there is no obstruction in the fuel line.
